JC Johnson’s Undeclared Gems: Jermaine Burton

In the first installment of “Undeclared Gems” I covered another transfer WR in the 2023 class in Jordan Addison. Jermaine Burton is someone I’m more intrigued with as a transfer player, however. The former four-star recruit from Calabasas, CA, possesses good size, listed at 6’0 even, 200lbs. He has blazing speed. Burton is an exciting prospect to me particularly because of Alabama’s success last season in bringing Jameson Williams in via the transfer portal. I believe Burton will be asked to do a lot of the same things as Williams and will be able to showcase his abilities with a Heisman trophy-winning QB, Bryce Young. Talk about an upgrade from Stetson Bennett. Despite the lack of usage at Georgia, Burton still put out a great tape and was used creatively in the scheme when given the opportunity to touch the ball.

The 1973 season saw the NFL’s first 2,000-yard rusher. Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson whisked his way to history by rolling up 2,003 rushing yards. His Buffalo Bills only needed him to handle the rock 332 times. That was good for an average per attempt of six yards. Those were truly astonishing feats by the man most fans referred to as “The Juice.”

AFC West IDP Preview

Free agency and the draft are finished and though we are still three plus months from the beginning of the season teams are starting to resemble what they are going to be heading into the season. I’m going to go division by division breaking down the IDP relevant starters and some sleepers to keep on your watch list for training camp or dynasty stashes. Denver Broncos Defensive Coordinator: Ed Donatell 3-4 DefenseCoach Donatell has been coaching in college or the professional ranks since 1979. He has eight years of DC experience. He and HC Vic Fangio have been coaching together since 2011. Donatell has the DC title but Fangio will be heavily involved in the plan of attack.Their Chicago Bears sported the number three defense in yards per game. Their 3-4 typically produces very good ILB and safety tackle numbers.IDP Relevant Defensive Tackles: Shelby Harris, Dre’Mont Jones, Zach KerrHarris will not kill you at his current NT position. Unfortunately, he lacks the girth of a true run plugger. Jones also doesn’t fit the traditional mold. He is good with hands and he can create a decent initial burst. Yet, double teams could swallow both guys up and out of tackle contention. Do not be surprised if either end up moving to DE during the next offseason. Kerr seems to be the forgotten commodity that could fill the 3-4 NT role. At 330 pounds (sorry to sound stereotypical) it is still baffling to me that Kerr is listed as a DE on most sites. He should get snaps all over. IDP Relevant Defensive Ends: Derek Wolfe, Adam Gotsis, Wolfe has never had more than six sacks in a season. He does have okay tackle totals over the last five seasons. He has definitely slowed down over the last two years and you can expect a snap regression. Gotsis was a reserve during his rookie year. Since then he has strung together two decent seasons. Some may even whisper about him being a breakout candidate. It is time to remind the masses that you must be JJ Watt strong to be an IDP weapon as a 3-4 DE.

RB Theorem: The Lost True Tale of Spec Sanders

He was born Orban Eugene ”Spec” Sanders on January 26th, 1919. The Oklahoma product played his college ball the University of Texas. He was the sixth overall pick of the 1942 draft by Washington Redskins. Sanders never appeared in a game for the ’Skins. In fact, he didn’t make his professional debut until 1946. This was due to military service during WWII. Post active duty, Sanders joined an upstart league called the All-American Football Conference. The league was designed for ex-college greats who didn’t make one of 10 NFL rosters, and ex-pros who were returning from military service.

The Legend of Bart Starr… R.I.P.

He was born Bryan Bartlett Starr on January 9th, 1934 in Montgomery, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama. As a non-starter during his freshman season, he played enough minutes to earn a varsity letter. This included him seeing some pivotal minutes in relief during the Orange Bowl. As a sophomore, he was a starter at quarterback, safety, and punter.

Injuries and coaching changes prevented Starr from seeing much action during his final two seasons with the Crimson Tide. The Alabama basketball coach at the time still saw an incredible and determined athlete in Starr. He quickly recommended him to a friend who happened to be the Green Bay Packers director of player personnel.
