IDP By The Numbers: AFC Week 5

3 – IDP left the game with an injury. Xavier Williams (ankle) left after 10 snaps. Anthony Hitchens (groin) left after 11 snaps. Chris Jones (groin) left after 38 snaps. Ben Nieman replaced Hitchens and played every down. Derrick Nnadi (77%) saw a substantial increase in snaps with both Jones and Williams out. Third-round rookie Khalen Saunders played his first 33 defensive snaps of the season.

Arizona Cardinals
1 – Game left on Patrick Peterson’s six-game PED suspension.
2 – Snap difference between safeties Jalen Thompson and Deionte Thompson. Supplemental rookie Jalen played 47 snaps, 70%. Fifth-round rookie Deionte (unrelated), played 45 snaps, 64%. Jalen got the start after Arizona released DJ Swearinger but they’re both going to play, capping each other’s value.

IDP Stock Market: Week 6 Edition

CB, Logan Ryan, Tennessee TitansOne of the best defensive backs in the league is off to a hot start this season. Ryan’s stock is on the rise, especially in position-specific leagues that require you to start corners. His ability and the Titan’s willingness to use him as a blitzer makes him so much more valuable. Logan already has 2.5 sacks on the season and is on pace to destroy his record of four, that he just set last season.

S, Devin McCourty, New England Patriots
The ten-year veteran is off to one of his best starts to begin a season in his career. He’s leading the NFL interceptions (4) through the first four games of the season and has one in each game. This is the most he’s had in a season, since 2012, his third year in the league. While this pace won’t continue, I do expect him to continue to be an impact player in pass defense.

IDP Rookie Recap Week 3

Each week I will recap the top performances by this year’s rookie defenders. Some are well-known names and others come out of nowhere. Rookies are highly coveted in the dynasty community, but their value can be very volatile at times. In this series each week, we’ll look at their numbers and what impact they have. I am also including their snap counts and percentage of snaps. These snap counts can tell us a lot about how much a player is being used and the opportunities they have to make plays. I like to target rookies that play 80% plus of the team’s defensive snaps. Let’s jump right into this week’s group.

Baltimore Ravens
1 – Sack by Matthew Judon. That makes one sack in each game for Judon. Judon’s snap shares have been fantastic for a 3-4 OLB (80%, 80%, 85%).28 – Snaps played by Anthony Averett. Averett has not fully locked down the third CB job in Baltimore in the absence of both Tavon Young and Jimmy Smith. Averett only played 41%, behind Maurice Canady (46%) who was promoted from the practice squad before Week 2.

IDP Stock Market: Week 4

OLB, Shaq Barrett, Tampa Bay BuccaneersThe five-year pro, from Colorado State, is one of the hottest names in IDP right now. In his previous four seasons, all with the Denver Broncos, he never had more than six sacks in a season. His career-best of five and a half came in his rookie season. After his rookie contract expired, the Broncos decided to go in a different direction. The Buccaneers stepped up and took a chance on him and signed him to a one year $4 million deal. The return for them so far has paid off big time!

IDP By the Numbers: NFC Week Three

Atlanta Falcons169 – Snaps played by Keanu Neal in 2019. A season after suffering a torn ACL, Neal’s season ends in week three with a torn achilles. It’s just devastating. Before the two injuries, Neal was seen by some as the dynasty S1. Last season, Ricardo Allen replaced Neal at SS with Damontae Kazee replacing Allen at FS. Then Allen went down and it became a huge mess. Kazee is currently the nickel CB and it would likely be difficult for him to play both nickel CB and FS. Kemal Ishmael logged 39 snaps, 55%, after not playing a single defensive snap in week two. He’s the likely replacement for Neal. But the Falcons like Kazee as a playmaker, so it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibilities to see Kazee play safety in base packages and move into the slot for sub-packages with Ishmael limited to sub-packages. This situation will need to be watched going forward.

Rather than doing a full, 5,000-word snap count thread every week, we’re going to simplify things a little bit. You don’t need me to tell you Bobby Wagner is playing 100% of snaps every week. So we’re just going to hit on the important numbers and any trends we’re starting to see.
Baltimore Ravens
1 – Total tackles between Baltimore’s Chris Board and Kenny Young combined. Board was on the field for 15 snaps while Young played 17 snaps.

Expecting 16 games from Hicks is a mistake and the pace will slow down without more OT games. Antoine Bethea led the Cardinals with 1,111 snaps last season. Typically there are a few players who top 1,100 snaps every season. Hicks and Swearinger being on pace for 1,300 snaps, would mean they would play almost four more games’ worth of snaps than the typical highest seasonal snap total.
