Rapid Reaction: Devin Singletary/Damien Harris

Today we’re going to review a couple of recent free agent RB signings and analyze how they will affect not only the players themselves but the teams they signed to as well as other players on the team from a fantasy perspective.

Devin Singletary – Houston Texans

Ahhh Devin “The Electric Motor” Singletary. I was very high on him as a small school prospect coming out of FAU, and he went to the perfect situation with the Buffalo Bills. Unfortunately, I was wrong, his game didn’t translate to the NFL and he’s been a massive disappointment since entering the league. He signed a one deal worth $3.75M with the Texans, which is around mid-level for a mid-level RB like he is. Singletary is a subpar talent who is 5’7” and 203 lbs. That’s one inch taller than my mom. Dameon Pierce managers should breathe a HUGE sigh of relief with this singing. It lessens the chance of the Texans drafting an RB with high draft capital and Devin Singletary is NOT a serious threat to Pierce’s goal line work or fantasy production.

Fantasy Conclusion

BUY BUY BUY Dameon Pierce. We all should have known he wasn’t going to keep this backfield to himself but Singletary was the perfect signing for Pierce fans. He’s never going to do anything but be a third down back that spells Pierce every once in a while. Devin Singletary himself is a dynasty sell, take the third-round rookie pick you can get for him and move on with a flier on someone like Kayshon Boutte.

Damien Harris – Buffalo Bills

Replacing Devin Singletary in Buffalo is the newly acquired Damien Harris from the Patriots. I love this move for both Harris and the Bills. As much as we in the fantasy community want James Cook to be a thing he’s just not a bell cow back, but he’s the perfect third down compliment type of back to Damien Harris. Think Thunder/Lightning Ron Dayne/Tiki Barber from back in the day.

Harris is a big back that can grind out the tough yards and finally out from under Bill Belichick and his RB shenanigans perhaps we’ll actually get to see what he can do. The only issue I see here is that Harris’ contract is for one year and is only at $1.7M. That’s half of what Devin Singletary received. The concern with that is that it may not preclude the Bills from spending high draft capital on a stud rookie RB.

Fantasy Conclusion

For now, Damien Harris is a dynasty buy and can likely be had relatively cheaply. However, built into him is the fear that Buffalo drafts a superior RB that makes him obsolete. If you can get him for cheap, take the flier and rejoice if the Bills don’t spend high draft capital on an RB.
