Jared Goff was the number one overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played poorly in his rookie year after beginning the season on the bench, but his play improved dramatically in 2017 under Head Coach Sean McVay. He led the Rams to an 11-5 record, made the Pro Bowl, and finished as the QB12. In 2018, Goff turned in his best season to date, posting career-highs across the board in completions, completion percentage, yards, and TDs and finishing as the QB7. The 2019 season was a bit of a disappointment, especially in the passing TDs department, but Goff led the league in pass attempts and managed to finish as the QB13.

2020 OUTLOOK

Jared Goff is one of the better late-round QB targets in redraft this season. He plays in a high scoring, high volume offense with talented pass-catchers at every position. And when you dig into the 2019 numbers, it’s easy to see that his poor finish was due almost entirely to his 3.5% TD rate, which was 28th-best among all QBs. With a 5.8% TD rate, his average from 2017, and 2018, he would’ve thrown for 36 TDs and finished as the QB6. The main problem for Goff was that the Rams scored 20 rushing TDs, which limited the opportunities for passing TDs. However, extreme pass-to-rush TD ratios almost always regress toward the mean the following season, which is what I expect will propel Goff to yet another QB1 performance in 2020.

DYNASTY ANALYSIS

As a 25-year-old QB with three top-15 finishes already under his belt, Jared Goff probably doesn’t get enough respect within the dynasty community. His critics say he would never survive in the league without Sean McVay’s innovative offensive scheme. And while that may be true, it’s fair to wonder if he’ll ever have to. Goff is under contract with the Rams through the 2024 season, while Sean McVay is currently signed through 2023.

Furthermore, the Rams spent two 2nd-round picks and a 4th-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on skill position players, which reaffirms the notion that they will continue to be an offensive-minded team. For these reasons, Goff should be a rock-solid QB2 option in SF and 2QB leagues for years to come.
