COLLEGE PRODUCTION

Year Games Played Attempts Yards Yards/Attempt TDs
2022 (FR) 13 88 401 4.6 6
2023 (SO) 13 253 1,504 5.9 15
2024 (SR) 12 281 1,660 5.9 15

Hampton finished his Tarheel career as the fifth-leading rusher in North Carolina history (3,565 yards). As a Freshman in 2022, Hampton played in all 13 games, earning four starts, while playing behind a player named Elijah Green. During the 2023 season, Green got injured early in the season, and Hampton stapled himself as the workhorse back for the Tar Heels. He finished his 2023 campaign with 1,504 rushing yards (fifth in the nation) and 15 touchdowns. He earned second-team AP All-American and First-team All-ACC honors. Last season, he made another jump forward, finishing third in the country with 1,660 rushing yards. He added another 15 rushing touchdowns and earned Second-team AP All-American and First-team All-ACC honors once again. Hampton was also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award (nation’s top RB).

STRENGTHS

Big back with the ideal frame for the pro level. Violent and physical runner who drives his legs, finishes through contact, and does all he can to earn the extra yard. Tremendous contact balance, often bouncing off of would-be tacklers more often than not. Patient and willing to let holes develop in front of him before attacking the line of scrimmage. Can get skinny in tight spaces. Decent speed, but for his size, this is a strength. Reliable hands as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. Shows a willingness to get physical as a pass-blocker even though this isn’t a strength of his.

WEAKNESSES

Isn’t elite in open space. Doesn’t possess that next-level speed. Shows little creativity and wiggle, as he tends to be physical instead of attempting to make defenders miss. Not a great route runner at this point. Tendency to take plays off as a pass-blocker. More often than not, he displays poor hand placement at the point of attack as a blocker as well.

ATHLETIC TESTING

At the NFL Combine, Hampton measured in at 6’0” and 221 lbs, which equates to a BMI of 30. He ran a 4.46 40-yard dash (86th percentile), equating to a 111.7 speed score (93rd percentile). Hampton also displayed a 129.6 burst score (92nd percentile) and a college dominator score of 38.5 percent (90th percentile).

Hampton shows excellent speed and burst for his build. He showcased great leaping abilities, as his 130” broad jump placed him tied for second out of 23 running back participants. Hampton also put together a respectable 38” vertical jump. He also displayed decent strength, as his 18 reps on the bench press ranked him tied for fourth in the group. His biggest red flag is his agility and ability to change direction, as he ran a 4.40-second 20-yard shuttle (placing seventh out of eight participants).

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Good

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Poor

Hampton was selected with the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Last season, the Chargers leaned on J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards as their one-two punch. Edwards flopped drastically, but Dobbins put together a solid season. Both are now still free agents, and the Chargers will add Hampton to a running back room that features Najee Harris. It looks like John Harbaugh will take the 2024 Lions’ approach that will feature two starting running backs to split the loads. Harris is a productive veteran who still plays a prominent role for the Chargers’ offense. This isn’t an ideal landing spot for Hampton, as he won’t carry a workhorse type of load to start his career.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

Hampton received a late first-round grade from me before the draft, and I had him as the second-ranked running back behind only Ashton Jeanty.

In your rookie drafts, Hampton is a first-round draft pick, but the landing spot indicates he could slip to the latter half of the first round. Expect him to get drafted between picks five and nine. In Superflex leagues, he may be more towards that seven to 10 range.
