DFF Draft Coverage: Zach Wilson to the Jets

Zach Wilson | BYU     6’2”   214 lbs.     3/5/1999 (Age 21)

Zach Wilson was drafted second overall by the New York Jets, becoming the second quarterback and second overall player in the 2021 NFL Draft.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION

Wilson took over as the starting quarterback for BYU as a true freshman. Wilson accumulated 7,652 passing yards and 56 TDs versus only 15 INTs in his three-year collegiate career at BYU. He also proved to be a capable rusher with 642 career rushing yards and 15 TDs on the ground. Though he averaged only three yards per rush (including sacks).

Wilson’s first three seasons were rather pedestrian but in a selective opponent season, he exploded from a late-round draft pick to a top prospect. In his junior season against weak opponents, Wilson completed 73.5% of his passes for 3,692 yards and 33 TDs versus 3 INTs.He also added career highs in the ground game rushing for 254 (39% of his total) rushing yards and 10 (66% of his total) rushing TDs.

ATHLETIC TESTING

At his isolated Pro Day, Zach Wilson measured in at 6’2” and 214lbs. Which equates to a BMI of 27.86. Wilson did not participate in athletic testing during his Pro Day, but did complete his measurements and throw. Wilson is excellent with his foot speed and mobility, both enabling him to move within the pocket and escape it. He has a quick release and has a lot of zip on his passes. However, he lacks consistency in his mechanics, this could lead to bad habits being developed in an early losing situation in his NFL career.

DRAFT ANALYSIS

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Excellent

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Terrible

Wilson joins a Jets team that has restructured their front office and coaching staff in the last couple of years. Wilson’s top options in the passing game are Corey Davis, Jamison Crowder, and Denzel Mims. These are not enticing options, but the Jets do have the draft capital firepower to add talent.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

Since 2000 the New York Jets have only produced two top 12 quarterback finishes. This was done by Mark Sanchez and Ryan Fitzpatrick respectively. The Jets are a black hole for quarterbacks and have not produced much fantasy production across all skill positions. Can Zach Wilson turn around this dreary organization?

Zach Wilson will likely be drafted from the 1.03 to the 1.07 range in Superflex Rookie Drafts. To me this is a wild reach, I am fading Wilson at this price. I would much prefer going in another direction with my teams in that range. If he is still sitting there at the turn of the second round then I may pull the trigger on quarterback-needy teams.
