The Denver Broncos selected Albert Okwuegbunam, Tight End, out of Missouri. He was the 118th pick in the fourth round and was the seventh tight end drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Albert Okwuegbunam is 6’5” and 255 pounds. He played three years at Missouri and will be 22 years old at the beginning of the 2020 NFL Season. Okwuegbunam did have multiple shoulder injuries which cost him six games over his last two years.
Okwuegbunam broke out at Missouri in his freshman year, showing the potential he has for big games on the stat sheet. He grabbed 29 receptions for 415 yards and 11 touchdowns. One trend throughout his career has been the reception to touchdown ratio; Okwuegbunam caught a touchdown on every 4.2 receptions. Touchdowns dropped off after his freshman year, but he continued to put up solid numbers. His totals for college amount to 98 receptions, 1187 yards, and 23 scores. Okwuegbunam put up a 31.2% college dominator rating putting him in the 90th percentile for his position. He wasn’t featured a ton in Missouri’s offense but he made good use of the looks he received.
Albert O, as he is called by some, has elite speed for his position. His 40-yard dash (4.49) was in the range of Cam Akers (4.47) and Jerry Jeudy (4.45). For reference, the average tight end 40-yard dash time is 4.70. He is not quite a Vernon Davis type speedster (4.38), but when he catches the ball in space he can move. Okwuegbunam shows on film that he can make some fun catches and has the ability to break away from defenders after the catch. This elite speed for his position makes him an intriguing matchup option at the next level.

The Denver Broncos clearly had a vision of offense coming into the 2020 draft. They’ve helped their young quarterback a lot in the first four rounds of this draft. Albert O is a great compliment to Noah Fant and provides that next level speed that should allow him to contribute quickly in the NFL. If the Broncos are going to keep up with their AFC rivals, they’ll need that speed and they’ll need those big offensive games. Albert O should see the field somewhat quickly in two-tight end sets. Denver targeted their tight ends 20% of the time in 2019 so there is some optimism for decent target share for Albert O. The familiarity will help, as Drew Lock reunites with his college tight end from Missouri.
Albert O has the raw skills but needs some developmental time at the next level. One trend on film is his inability to reroute himself after being pushed off of his initial route by the defender. Toughness against the press and improvements in his route-running are two areas he will need to focus on to be a reliable tight end. That said, because of his size and speed, he could eventually develop into a matchup nightmare in the NFL if he has the time and work-ethic to develop his game.
