Trey Lance | North Dakota State 6’3” 224 lbs. 5/9/2000 (Age 20.97)
Trey Lance was drafted third overall by the San Francisco 49ers, becoming the third quarterback and third overall player in the 2021 NFL Draft.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Lance took over as the starting quarterback for North Dakota State as a redshirt freshman. Lance accumulated just 2,786 passing yards and 28 TDs versus zero INTs in his one-year collegiate career at North Dakota State. I removed the single-game 2020 statistics from his totals because of the nature that North Dakota State scheduled the game for NFL Draft candidates, before playing a Spring Season. Lance also proved to be an elite rusher with 1,182 career rushing yards and 16 TDs on the ground.
Lance played against mediocre competition at best. His wide receivers were bigger, stronger, and faster than the defenders they faced. Trey Lance was bigger, strong, and faster than the defenders he faced. Based on this, it could be a very difficult transition to the NFL.
ATHLETIC TESTING
At his isolated Pro Day, Trey Lance measured in at 6’3” and 224lbs. Which equates to a BMI of 27.35. Lance did not participate in athletic testing during his Pro Day, but did complete his measurements and throw. Lance has the ideal body for an NFL quarterback, and he is an athlete. Lance was asked by Division 1 schools to play safety in reference to his athletic abilities.
DRAFT ANALYSIS
Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Excellent
Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Excellent
Lance was selected with the third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He will team up with offensive guru Kyle Shanahan. Fields will have exceptional weapons at his disposal immediately starting with George Kittle, Brandin Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel at wide receiver. In Shanahan’s zone-running scheme it hardly matters who the back in the game is, as the system has proven to produce.
In 2020 the 49ers went 6-10, leading them to the twelfth-overall pick in the draft which they traded in order to pick from the third selection. The 49ers have 14/1 odds to make the upcoming NFL Super Bowl according to VegasInsider. With the selection of Fields, it should be wheels up for the 49ers in 2021 and beyond. They have the flexibility to start Fields right away or learn from Jimmy Garappolo immediately.
FANTASY INSIGHTS
Trey Lance has played in just 17 collegiate games against low-level competition. However, he does have all of the physical tools to succeed at the next level. He also provides the rushing upside that if he hits, provides elite quarterback production for fantasy.
Overall, Lance is an unprecedented evaluation who will require time to adjust to the speed and complexities of the NFL. Lance’s physical traits, poise, and intelligence are a rare package for his age and meager experience. He should compete for NFL starting snaps during his rookie season. The potential for the Lance-Shanahan team is limitless, it’s just a matter of Lance developing into a starting NFL quarterback.
