Tyree Wilson | Texas Tech 6’6” 271 lbs. | 05/20/2000 (22)
Tyree Wilson was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders, becoming the second Edge Rusher and seventh overall player selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Tyree Wilson originally committed to Texas A&M, redshirting his first year in College Station. He then played in 12 games as a reserve in 2019 and compiled 12 tackles, three TFLs, and 1.5 sacks. Wilson transferred to Texas Tech prior to the 2020 season, starting five of nine contests and registering 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks. In 2021 Wilson led the Red Raiders with 38 tackles, 13.5 TFLs, and seven sacks, garnering honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. He also made the Associated Press All-Bowl Team with his performance against Mississippi State, with four tackles, two sacks, and three passes deflected in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl win.
Last season Wilson had a strong showing, leading his defense with 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks among his 61 tackles in 10 starts before a foot injury ended his season. He earned second-team Associated Press All-American and first-team all-conference selection for his efforts.
FILM
Tyre Wilson has a massive frame with length and long limbs. The sky is the limit in terms of his ceiling for development. Wilson has a combination of traits and athleticism that yield flashes of dominant play in both the run game and as a pass rusher. His size, length, and lateral quickness make him adept as a back-side run game disruptor. He is athletic enough to run plays down if they bounce out wide. He should continue to grow in his football IQ and awareness, which are still developing at this stage. Wilson has the physical tools to create pocket push as a power rusher early on, but he needs to develop his moves and hand usage to reach his full potential. He is an athleticism/traits-based selection, not unlike when Jacksonville selected Travon Walker in 2022.
ATHLETIC TESTING
Tyree Wilson recorded 23 reps in the bench press. He chose to opt out of the other athletic tests and instead participated in positional drills. Teams were not concerned about his athletic ability, as he looks and moves like an unpolished Myles Garrett.
DRAFT ANALYSIS
Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Excellent
Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Good
Wilson was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders.
FANTASY INSIGHTS
Tyree Wilson lands in the top 10 as most analysts had projected and joins a Las Vegas situation that is a little better than it may look on the surface. He will be able to learn from a great group of veterans in Chandler Jones and Maxx Crosby, and will eventually be playing across from Crosby as a bookend pass rusher. Don’t expect immediate elite returns in season one, but the upside of Wilson is immense given his physical tools and his situation.
Tyree Wilson is the DE2 of this very strong rookie class with his superior physical tools and potential. He should develop into a cornerstone player in dynasty IDP leagues and has the upside to become a top-five EDGE eventually. Expect to see him drafted early in the mid-to-late second round of dynasty rookie drafts.
