49ers draft Tyrion Davis-Price: The goal is for strength in numbers at running back - The Athletic

Tyrion Davis-Price was drafted with the 29th pick of the third round by the San Francisco 49ers, becoming the fifth running back and 93rd overall player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

In his true freshman season, Tyrion Davis-Price contributed for the 2019 national champion Tigers, scoring six touchdowns on the ground on 64 carries for 295 yards in a reserve role. The former top-10 running back recruit led LSU with 446 rushing yards on 104 carries (8 for 47 receiving in nine games, four starts). TDP again led the Tigers with 1,003 yards and six scores rushing on 211 carries in 2021. He caught 10 passes for 64 yards as well over his 12 starts.

Recording a 4.48 40-yard dash was very impressive for a big, physical back like TDP. However, his 30” vertical and 117” broad jumps were somewhat disappointing. He chose not to participate in any other drills but at least showed he can break off long runs at the next level with sub-4.50 speed.

Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Above-Average

Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Good

Tyrion Davis-Price was selected with the 93rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

TDP comes battle-tested to the NFL, having played in the SEC against some of the best defensive players college football has to offer. TDP is a large back who is a between-the-tackles runner that is capable of catching the ball out of the backfield. TDP can improve in pass protection but has ample experience and a basis to work within that department. At first glance, the landing spot is great–the 49ers like to pound the rock and have a great offensive line. However, there is a crowded backfield for TDP to compete with. The 49ers are notorious for distributing touches to multiple backs per game, so TDP will have the opportunity to contribute right away and potentially carve out a relevant role in the offense in 2022. This pick leads your author to believe teammate Trey Sermon has lost almost all value. It is important to note: some scouts say keeping him motivated might be a concern at the next level.
