With Jerrion Ealy on the same team as him, Conner only started two career games at Ole Miss. He did play in every game for the Rebels during the last three seasons, serving as Ealy’s backup and the team’s primary short-yardage back. He produced a combined 1,580 rushing yards in his three collegiate seasons on 304 attempts (5.2 yards per attempt). His 26 career rushing touchdowns land him third all-time in Mississippi University’s history.
STRENGTHS
Thick, muscular frame who excels in short-yardage/goal-line situations. Squares up and never backs down from opposing defenders as a pass-blocker. He has great body control for his size and meets with force when finishing his runs. Has the foot agility to make sudden cuts. Has great vision and willingness to fight for the extra yard near the end zone.
WEAKNESSES
Isn’t dynamic in the open field. Limited experience as a third-down back/pass-catcher. Lacks ideal speed and will struggle to turn the corner against pro linebackers. Never handled a heavy workload and not much experience on special teams.
ATHLETIC TESTING
At the NFL combine, Conner measured in at 5’10” and 222 lbs. Which equates to a BMI of 31.9. He ran a modest 4.59 40-yard dash (50th percentile), equating to a 100.0-speed score (65th percentile). Conner also displayed a 111.7 burst score (18th percentile) and a college dominator of 17.7 percent (27th).
Conner lacks great speed for his position, but he makes up for it with his elite strength. He posted 25 reps on the bench press, which is the second-most by any running back who participated at the combine.
DRAFT ANALYSIS
Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Fair
Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Great
Conner was selected with the 154th-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Trevor Lawrence gets another young and talented running back to add to a backfield that already includes Travis Etienne and James Robinson.
FANTASY INSIGHTS
Conner should serve as the RB2/3 for this team going forward, and he may receive the bulk of short-yardage and goal-line carries over Robinson and Etienne. The bruiser back shouldn’t be overlooked in fantasy draft settings, especially in deep start-up leagues. Robinson’s future is in question after tearing his Achilles late last season. Remember that Etienne missed his entire rookie season after suffering a serious foot injury. Conner could receive his opportunity sooner rather than later with all that in mind.
