Gray is a former high school state champion in the 100-meter dash and 4×100-meter relay. He took his elite speed to the field for a University called Blinn College for two years. He came out of those two years labeled as the top junior college prospect in the country, as he hauled in 54 receptions for 877 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games played as a sophomore. Then he took his talents to SMU. In 18 career games played for the Mustangs, Gray hauled in 82 receptions for 1,251 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also accumulated 70 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six attempts.
STRENGTHS
Ideal Y/Z receiver at the pro level, who excelled in the return game. Elite speed and explosive off the line of scrimmage. Maintains that elite speed through route stems and turns. Aggressive hand-fighter who often slips into the open field against press coverage. A ton of upside as a YAC receiver. Also puts in the effort as a run-blocker.
WEAKNESSES
Lacks concentration at times, as he’s dropped would-be touchdowns on multiple occasions during his collegiate career. Was tasked with a limited route tree during his time at SMU. News to improve on selling his breaks and cuts when running routes. Also needs to develop more strength, as he struggles with physical corners.
ATHLETIC TESTING
At the NFL combine, Gray measured in at 6’0” and 186 lbs. Which equates to a BMI of 25.2. At the combine, he ran a blazing 4.33 40-yard dash (98th percentile), which at his height and weight equates to a 110.5-speed score (92nd percentile). Gray also recorded a 120.8 burst score (47th percentile), an 11.75 agility score (7th percentile), a 9.87 catch radius (25th percentile), and a college dominator of 27.0 percent (42nd percentile).
Gray possesses elite speed, as his 4.33 40-yard dash was the fourth-fastest time out of the 40 participants. On the other hand, he has a below-average wingspan for an NFL receiver (31 ⅞”).
DRAFT ANALYSIS
Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Fair
Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Fair
Gray was selected with the 105th-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
With all the buzz surrounding Deebo Samuel, he’s now joined by Gray in a wide receiver room that also features Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings.
FANTASY INSIGHTS
Gray brings versatility to a crowded wide receiver room, as he has a chance at competing for the WR3 spot for San Francisco. He came into this draft as a top-30 wide receiver, but you should expect minimal fantasy impact from him to start his career. Barring a big move before the season, Gray isn’t worth a draft selection in most league formats.
