Last year when this series debuted, I wanted to help shed light on one of my favorite tricks in Fantasy Football, Waiver Wire Sniping. The strategy is simple. Without compromising your roster (of course), look to see if you have an available roster spot or a player that you were holding as a possible fill-in for a week that is no longer needed. Then look a week or two ahead and see if any of your current starters are on a bye or have a matchup you want to avoid.
By picking up a streaming option or high-end stash before the weekend action, you can “snipe” that player for free and before that player is featured on podcasts (such as the Fantasy Football Fellas podcast – shameless plug) and waiver articles across the fantasy football world. “Sniping” allows you to eliminate the grueling wait on Wednesday or Thursday morning, hoping your Waiver Wire pick-up isn’t grabbed by another team with a lower waiver priority or more FAAB dollars. If the chips fall your way, you may have a very valuable piece for the low-low price of NOTHING.
Each week I’ll give you potential streaming options for the week ahead, some stash candidates that are widely available in redraft leagues and highlighting the tough matchups and teams on bye in the coming week.
Here are some guys that you might not necessarily need for this week but might be high Waiver Wire pickups for week 9.
Week 9 Streaming Options
Baker Mayfield vs. KC (43%) – Baker ended up with a nice fantasy day last week against the Bucs and could be a solid streaming option next week against a Chiefs defense that gives up the 7th most fantasy points to QBs on the year. It has been a little front-loaded against KC, but I think Baker can be a top 10-12 QB in week 9
Derek Carr @ SF (25%) – Carr has been highly disappointing this season, and now without Amari Cooper and Marshawn Lynch, we’ll get a look at how this offense will run with the Raiders coming off the bye this week. In week 9, Carr has a plus matchup against the 49ers that have given up at least 2 TDs to every QB this season except Josh Rosen in week 5.
Doug Martin @ SF (49%) – Another Raider here, but San Francisco gives up the 10th most fantasy points to opposing RBs and Martin is still available in half of Yahoo leagues.
Raheem Mostert vs. OAK (48%) – Same matchup on Thursday Night Football as Martin, but if Breida is out for the 49ers, I like Mostert a lot in week 9. He’s already a solid pick up for this week against the Cards, but with the 49ers on a short week, if Breida cannot suite up this Sunday, he might be a no-go for Thursday as well.
Trenton Cannon @ MIA (8%) – A deeper option this week is Trenton Cannon who had 73 total yards (most coming through the air) in week 7 filling in for Bilal Powell. The Jets get a PLUS matchup next week against a Dolphins team that can’t stop RBs so if Cannon is splitting time in the New York backfield he’s worth an add in all PPR formats.
Tre’Quan Smith vs. LAR (28%) – We didn’t see a lot from Smith last week in a tough matchup against Baltimore, but he still saw more targets than Cameron Meredith. The Saints match up next week back at home against the high octane Rams offense could lead to a lot of passing from Drew Brees. I like Smith as a WR3/Flex next week.
Martavis Bryant @ SF (18%) – I know, another Raider. But a lot has changed in Oakland the past week, and as we find out what this offense will look like, you should get ahead of it. If Bryant is the benefactor of Cooper being shipped out of town, you’ll want him on your roster.
Chris Herndon @ MIA (6%) – Herndon has been the lone bright spot in this offense for fantasy owners the past two weeks, with 40 yards in a TD in both games for the Jets. If you’re in a deeper league, Herndon is an interesting add.
DAL vs. TEN (11%) – The Cowboys are on bye this week, and are facing off against a Titans team who gives up the 6th most points to opposing DSTs. The Cowboys DST also has double-digit fantasy points in 2 of their 3 home games this year.
The Stashes – Other players to monitor that might be available in your league. Listed below in order I would rank these pickups.
Shallow League Options: Geronimo Allison (48%), Willie Snead (34%), Christian Kirk (29%)
Deeper League Options: D.J. Moore (15%), Cameron Meredith (8%)
Shallow League Options: Ito Smith (39%), Kenjon Barner (30%), Ronald Jones II (22%)
Deeper League Options: Rashaad Penny (16%), Elijah McGuire (6%), Devontae Booker (3%)
Week 9 Potential Matchups to Avoid: BUF vs. CHI, PIT @ BAL
Teams on Bye next week: ARI, CIN, IND, JAX, NYG, PHI
