3. Nyheim Hines
Prefacing this dynasty buy-low asset with the reality that the price you will be spending should be pennies on the dollar. Now, with that said, Old Tom isn’t here to tell you how Hines is your long-term solution. Nonetheless, I am here to tell you that it’s players like Nyheim Hines who sometimes pop up out of the blue and surprise even the most intuitive of dynasty GMs. There’s no doubt that there is going to be an odd-man-out between Marlon Mack and Mr. Hines. Shoot, it may even be a case where both young RBs find themselves on the outside looking in if Jonathan Taylor is as good as I think he is. With that said, I’d like to call upon one of my favorite idioms, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Don’t believe me, just ask Forky.
Of course, I’m not calling either Mack or Hines trash. All I’m doing is making a motion that trash can sometimes be very subjective, and to be extra careful when composing your dynasty rosters so as not to objectively label guys due to their current situations. One of the reasons Old Tom is trying to acquire Nyheim is that I can’t help but feel Mr. Mack is the RB who will eventually find himself out of town. With one more year remaining on his rookie contract, it just feels like he’s the guy Taylor was drafted to replace.
What Hines offers this Colts organization is a skilled pass-catching weapon, out of the backfield, that has shown his potential and, most importantly, has two years remaining on a very team-friendly rookie contract. Additionally, I am also very excited to see what Philip Rivers and Nick Sirianni (OC) have in store for #21 over the course of these next two seasons. Why, you ask? Well, one of the most widely-known facts about Mr. Rivers is his love to check the ball down, when plays don’t develop.
No doubt he has a much better line in 2020 than he’s arguably ever had. Yet, what Old Tom has found is that traits like that don’t simply go by the wayside. Given this security blanket Philip wears so comfortably, Mr. Hines is about to benefit in a pretty decent manner. Or at least, Frank Reich has expressed similar optimism:
So, as you prep for the start of the NFL season by rounding out your dynasty squads, Old Tom wants you to know that Nyheim Hines is a name well worth monitoring. If the opportunity presents itself for acquisition, strike my friends!
2. T.Y. Hilton
As a faithful follower of Old Tom, you know by now that this #2 slot was always reserved for the savvy veteran I just can’t let go of. The best possible news you have going for you, in your current pursuit of Mr. Hilton, is his most recent hamstring injury. While I understand that sounds a bit confusing, my point is that his price tag is as low as it’s going to get, from here on out. What may have been the final straw, for many, will end up being the buying point for a few future trophy-hoisting GM’s.
Back in May, I let the entire Twitter universe know just how I felt about Mr. TY, with this #TomBomb.
Lucky for you, nothing has changed from my staunch stance. In fact, the more I devote my thoughts to the situation, the more I find myself desiring TY. The biggest reason for my buy-now stance is simply Hilton’s presence in that locker room. Don’t get me wrong, I believe there is some legitimate talent taking hold, but we’re not there yet. Still, two-years removed, in my opinion, gives Mr. Hilton two years of WR1 production. While I know that many in the dynasty community would have you selling such a relatively small window, I’m here to tell you to buy. I’ve always held to the belief that the best thing GMs can do is win. And I have all the confidence in the world that Hilton is about to return some prime-time 2016 TY production, now that he has Mr. Philip under center.
1. Parris Campbell
One of the best moves any dynasty GM can make is to capitalize on rough rookie campaigns. This belief is heightened when said campaigns are derailed by injury, as opposed to simply production. Enter one Parris Campbell. With a 97th-percentile Speed and Burst Score coupled with a 100th-percentile 40-yard-dash time, Mr. Campbell is simply a really fast young man. When the Indianapolis Colts drafted this Ohio State burner with the 59th overall selection, in the 2019 NFL draft, they did so with the intention that he would soon replace TY Hilton as the team’s WR1. In my mind, I’m not sure anything has changed on that front. The drafting of Michael Pittman Jr. adds another weapon to that receiving-core. No one is denying this. Is Pittman more talented than Campbell? Old Tom isn’t ready to make such a claim.
However, one thing I am ready to do is to tell you how vastly different these two weapons are. 6’4 225 offers such an altered skill-set compared to 6’0 205. We all know this and from this common knowledge, I just want to make it very clear that an apples-to-apples comparison isn’t necessary. What I do see happening is Pittman’s maturation process coincidentally coinciding with Hilton’s last dance. What you will notice about my forecast is Campbell’s name being absent. This is because his path is almost unaltered by those of his two most important running-mates. As alluded to in a previous #TomBomb, I can’t help but feel #15 is the most under-appreciated asset currently donning a Colts uniform.
Take Old Tom’s advice on this one, friends – acquire soon. No doubt, I have much love for Mr. Hilton and believe he’s fully capable of returning to greatness. However, if I’m wrong, his immediate production-replacement is quickly preparing for take-off…
