Mac Jones was named the starter in New England this week after the surprising release of previously presumed QB1 Cam Newton. This was shocking to many as Belicheck has not let out a peep of who he was going with for the season. So what’s Mac Jones dynasty value?
In Superflex, I see Jones right behind Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields. I get that being in New England is a luxury as they are a historic franchise, but looking at their roster construction, I don’t see them pushing Mac too far. With that being said, Mac currently sits at my QB24 for 2021, and my dynasty QB15.
Pros
* Mac Jones has the first-round draft capital. That is an important component when considering a player’s potential.
* Mac Jones has played against the best defenses SEC college football has to offer, throwing for at least 400 yards and four touchdowns vs Ohio State, Georgia, and Texas A&M.
* Mac has played with the best. He helped Devonta Smith win a Heisman and also had fellow first-rounders Najee Harris and Jaylen Waddle surrounding him. He can support multiple top-tier receivers.
* Player’s are already reported to be praising Mac’s ability and leadership, get ready because Mac is coming!
* Josh McDaniels knows how to run an efficient offense and will use Mac in the most effective way possible. Expect limited turnovers.
* Mac has a GREAT football brain. This guy has the chance to make big plays in big moments. I see him getting significantly better every season.
Cons
* The Patriots arguably have a top-three offensive line. This allows them to effectively game-manage by running the ball, which they did at the third-highest rate in the NFL last season.
* The Patriots have a top-tier defense even with the uncertainty of Stephon Gilmore‘s return (currently on the PUP list). More efficient defense equals less risk is taken on offense.
* A major fantasy concern with Mac Jones is that he provides ZERO rushing ability. In fantasy football, you don’t have the best arm to have relevancy, as rushing plus passing stats add up. Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, and Josh Allen are all top options because of their Konami Code status.
Overall View
* Mac will offer a safe floor with a limited ceiling weekly – QB2/3.
* Mac has looked fantastic through training camp. Picking up new offenses and schemes quickly.
* No rushing ability equals limited ceiling.
* NE limits turnovers and risks equating to a limited ceiling.
* Nonetheless, I like him as my Dynasty QB15 with the potential to offer consistent weekly production.
