Each Monday, Aaron Larson (@aalarson) and Michael Stephenson (@DFF_MSte) examine the hottest NFL rumors and offer their insights as to any potential fantasy football implications they might have. So, grab your beverage or snack of choice and get ready to start the week off with some good old-fashioned fantasy football speculation.
Rumor: Ravens rookie tight end Hayden Hurst will miss 3-4 weeks after having surgery on his foot.
Fantasy Fallout: Hurst is expected to be a contributor for Ravens’ offense, but the fact that he won’t be on the field for week one gives fellow rookie Mark Andrews a chance to make an early impression in Baltimore. (AL)
Rumor: Bears head coach Matt Nagy expects to keep running back Jordan Howard on the field for third downs.
Fantasy Fallout: There has been an abundance of Jordan Howard hype this offseason. If the Bears truly plan to use him as a three-down back with pass-catching ability then he has the potential to finish as a top-five fantasy running back. (AL)
Rumor: Colts head coach Frank Reich stated that running back Marlon Mack is “no slam dunk” to be ready for week one.
Fantasy Fallout: Mack was penciled in as the starting running back for the Colts, but if he is unable to go in week one it will likely be Christine Michael or rookie Jordan Wilkins getting first-team work. It might be best to completely avoid the Colts backfield in fantasy drafts at this point. (AL)
Rumor: It appears that running back Jonathan Williams is the current favorite to fill Mark Ingram’s role for the first four weeks of the season.
Fantasy Fallout: Head coach Sean Payton has made it clear that the Saints do not want to simply give Alvin Kamara a larger role while Mark Ingram is suspended. Jonathon Williams could have the opportunity to have a few nice fantasy games early in the season and is a perfect candidate for a late-round flier in fantasy drafts. (AL)
Rumor: Doug Baldwin will be ready to play in the season opener for Seattle.
Fantasy Fallout: Baldwin’s ADP had been plummeting in recent weeks due to a knee injury, but is slowly gaining traction. He should be locked in as Russell Wilson’s number one target. As long as he’s healthy, it would be disappointing if he finished outside of the top 12 fantasy receivers in 2018. (AL)
Rumour Baker Mayfield is locked in as the number two quarterback in Cleveland
Tyrod Taylor protects the football, with a TD/INT ratio of 51:16 in the last three years. He has one of the best supporting casts in the NFL and has finished 2nd, 1st and 3rd in rushing yards amongst QBs in the last three seasons. The only downside was the uncertainty over his job, with this worry alleviated I am confident in Tyrod as a fringe QB1 in 2018. (MS)
Rumour Eric Decker has hung up his helmet for good.
With week one fast approaching the Patriots WR depth chart now consists of Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Cordarrelle Patterson. Hogan should be the clear number 1, his ADP has climbed two whole rounds since August 1st to the 4.04, and it may not stop there. Hogan has top 5 upside in this offense and a very high floor if he stays healthy. (MS)
