Each Monday, Aaron Larson (@aalarson) and Michael Stephenson (@DFF_MSte) examine the hottest NFL rumors and offer their insights as to any potential fantasy football implications they might have. So, grab your beverage or snack of choice and get ready to start the week off with some good old-fashioned fantasy football speculation.
Rumor: Washington is hosting veteran running backs Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, and Orleans Darkwa in hopes of bolstering their running back depth
Fantasy Fallout: Washington’s backfield is a complete mess. Derrius Guice was lost to a season-ending ACL tear, Samaje Perine left the last preseason game with an ankle injury, and there are doubts that Chris Thompson will be one hundred percent at the beginning of the year. All these signs seemed to be pointing towards a steady workload for Rob Kelley, but that would be in serious doubt if they do sign one of the veteran backs to share the load.
Rumor: Rashaad Penny will be ready by week one after suffering a broken finger in practice.
Fantasy Fallout: Penny’s ADP was already plummeting due to the camp hype surrounding Chris Carson, and this news should only add to the free fall. Penny was being drafted high in the fourth round a month ago, but now that he is going late in the fifth the draft price is a bit more reasonable
Rumor: Marquise Goodwin has been Jimmy Garoppolo’s favorite target
Fantasy Fallout: Goodwin is already being drafted as Jimmy G’s favorite target, with an ADP 3 rounds earlier than Pierre Garcon. In his games with Garoppolo, Goodwin was on pace to finish as a top 10 WR in 2017, but this was without a healthy Garcon. Reports like this may drive up Goodwin’s price further, but should also increase the value of Garcon. Garcon is currently going at the 8.12 in PPR leagues as the WR40, in the games he played in 2017 he was on pace to finish as the WR25.
Rumor: Alshon Jeffery’s shoulder injury may force him to start the season on the PUP.
Fantasy Fallout: Jeffrey finished as the WR20 in PPR leagues in 2017 and is currently being drafted as the WR28 this season. That may seem like a decent value, but if he starts on the PUP list, he’ll miss the first six games of the season. If he avoids the PUP, he’ll still be hard to trust early on coming off the injury and paired with a quarterback also returning from injury in either Nick Foles or Carson Wentz.
Rumor: John Brown has been exceeding expectations so far in Ravens camp.
Fantasy Fallout: John Brown’s talent has never been in question, but his health has let him down time and time again. In 2015 Brown saw 103 targets and converted them into 1003 yards and 7 TDs in just 15 games. There will be a lot of opportunity in Baltimore in a passing game made up entirely of fresh faces, his current ADP of 13.02 will be a steal if he gets anywhere near 100 targets this year.
Rumor: Tarik Cohen should be considered more than just a running back because of how much he is lining up wide and being used as a receiver
Fantasy Fallout: In PPR leagues Cohen could be serviceable as a flex in some weeks this season, but at his current cost of the mid-sixth round I want to target every week starters for my roster. This is Jordan Howard’s backfield, and the Bears have heavily bolstered their passing game options in Allen Robinson, Trey Burton and Taylor Gabriel, so even if Cohen is a hybrid WR/RB this year, I can’t see him getting enough usage as either to be consistently fantasy relevant.
Rumor: Sam Darnold is trending towards starting for the Jets in week one.
Fantasy Fallout: Darnold isn’t worth taking in fantasy (redraft) drafts unless he is named the week one starter, and even then there are probably better options than an unproven rookie on what is likely to be a bad Jets team.
