Welcome, fellow IDP fantasy owners to my newest weekly article. For those of you just reading this for the first time, each week I am going to recap the top performances of a handful of rookies. We will look at how they did the past week, what it means going forward and, most importantly, the impact in the fantasy world. I hope this will help your fantasy rosters. With the fantasy playoffs in full swing, let’s jump right into this week’s write up.
S, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Miami Dolphins The rookie safety from Alabama had a stellar game versus the Minnesota Vikings, this past Sunday. In what is his best game to date, he had six tackles, two pass breakups, and one interception, in which he returned fifty yards for his first career touchdown. On the season he now has a total of seventy-three tackles and two interceptions. Minkah will be a big piece for this defense going forward.
LB, Darius Leonard, Indianapolis Colts What more can one say about Leonard that hasn’t already been said? The answer is not much lol! But seriously this super rook has been the most consistent rookie defender play in fantasy this season. This past Sunday versus the Dallas Cowboys, he added another eleven tackles and two pass breakups to his totals. He now has a whopping one hundred forty-four tackles, twelve for a loss, seven sacks, four forced fumbles, two recoveries, one interception, and six pass breakups. He’s the clear front-runner for Defensive Rookie of the Year.
LB, Leighton Vander Esch, Dallas Cowboys Dallas has had a number of great linebackers in their history and Vander Esch is the next star. Last Sunday versus the Indianapolis Colts he added another eight tackles to his season totals. He now has one hundred and nineteen tackles on the season, with two for a loss, two interceptions, and seven pass breakups. These numbers would be even better had he been a starter from the beginning of the season. Some were concerned that the return of Sean Lee could impact his stats, but I don’t see that being an issue. Lee just can’t stay healthy and Vander Esch has played just as well or better in his absence.
DE, Tyquan Lewis, Indianapolis Colts A newcomer to the weekly rookie recap and the second Colt of this weeks edition. Lewis is a rookie out of Ohio State, who was injured for the first half of season and is just now beginning to see some decent snap counts. This week versus the Dallas Cowboys, he showed his ability to rush the passer, that the Colts desperately need. He would tally three tackles and two sacks against a very good o-line. This was his breakout performance and now needs to build of this, and get more reps going forward.
DE, Sam Hubbard, Cincinnati Bengals The rookie defensive end has had some decent games this season but has been inconsistent for the most part. But this past weekend versus the Oakland Raiders, he showed his potential as an elite pass rusher, with his first career multi sack game. He recorded two in that game and now has a total of six on the season. The overall stats will get better as he becomes more consistent on a regular basis.
LB,Roquan Smith, Chicago Bears The newest edition to the Monster of the Midway history, in Smith. He got off to a bit of a slow start after a contract holdout, but has turned it on, once he got his feet wet. This past Sunday versus the Green Bay Packers he had ten tackles, which was his sixth game with at least that many. He now has one hundred and seven tackles on the season, with four sacks and one interception. He’s going to be a force for the Bears and fantasy owners, for years to come.
CB,Tavarius Moore, San Francisco 49ers. Here is another first timer to the weekly rookie recap. Due to injuries and ineffectiveness, Moore earned an increased role this past week versus the Seattle Seahawks. In that game he recorded seven tackles and two pass breakups. Look for him to see an increased role again next week against the Chicago Bears.
