Out With The Old, In With The New: Packers Edition

Players come, and players go. It’s out with the old and in with the new. It’s a neverending cycle in the National Football League. In the word of fantasy, it’s important to be able to see this changing of the guard. If you can do this, it will help to grab players just before their value booms. In this article, I will bring you a player who’s about to blow and the moves that led to this. So let’s get started.

The Green Bay Packers have a star in ILB Blake Martinez, but they need to put a good supporting cast around him. With the start of free agency days away, they have started to make some rosters moves. Their first move was to release one-year rental Antonio Morrison, who they traded for last August.

He played limited snaps and to keep him around the Packers would have had to pay his $2.025 million salary. At that price, it’s not worth it, and they were smart to move on. With Morrison now gone, the Packers are expected to release OLB Nick Perry next. By doing so, the Packers can avoid paying the $4.8 roster bonus he is due for 2019.

He originally signed a five-year / $60 million deal in 2017, but injuries have forced him to miss eleven of the last thirty-two games, including most of last season. They gave him the big contract after he fooled them with an eleven sack season in 2016, but has only been able to record one and a half sacks since then. That type of production isn’t what they paid for, and they will now cut their losses.

Now that they have cut Morrison and are expected to cut Perry, who will be the answer as a replacement? Well, they already have that player on their roster, which is ILB Oren Burks.

They drafted Burks in the 3rd round, with the 88th pick overall, out of Vanderbilt. He played both inside and outside linebacker for the Commodores, and that versatility will pay dividends for both he and Green Bay. As a rookie, he played mostly on special teams but did get some meaningful reps in with the defense. With the previously mentioned cuts, I expect him to get his shot at starting. If they give him that opportunity, he will flourish and be what they need, which is a youthful, talented and high IQ player. Burks is a smart and intelligent player with good speed and takes very good angles to the ball. I think he’s the perfect complimentary piece to pair with Martinez. His value is as low as it will be and now is the time to jump on acquiring him. Whether it’s in a trade or picking him up off waivers, he’s a great value right now.
