More Leagues: More Fun, More Variety, More Experience!

As many who have played can allude to, fantasy football can be a very addictive hobby or passion. Whether it’s redraft or dynasty, once a draft or auction has concluded there is often an immediate desire for more. Many programs and websites offer mock drafts, both against real-life people online and against computerized software. Unfortunately, often people do not take mock drafts seriously. Similarly, a computer can only adjust its algorithms so many times. Simply put, mock drafting is just not the same. 

The Advantages of Playing in Multiple Leagues

It can be a slippery slope, and it is certainly not recommended for brand new or novice owners, but playing in multiple leagues is just more fun. Additionally, playing in multiple leagues helps a person become a better fantasy football player. Playing in more leagues also offers the opportunity to try out a variety of league sizes, scoring settings, and further ancillary rules or stipulations. After a brief disclaimer and counsel, we will break down all the advantages of playing in more leagues. 

Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

Disclaimer: This is just one analysts’ advice. Please take it for what it is and do not take offense. Every year your author plays against and observes owners among many different forms of media communication (GroupMe, Twitter, online forums, etc.) joining dynasty league after dynasty league. In less than a calendar, many of those same screen names and monikers are orphaning dynasty leagues. As a commissioner of more than 20 dynasty leagues, your author URGES you not to do this. Please do not make life difficult on dynasty commissioners in the community! Commissioners are the unsung heroes of the dynasty community. 

If it is your first season trying fantasy football, or you are in your first few seasons, tempering your number of leagues is wise. However, if you are new and you get the itch and possess the disposable income, consider joining multiple redraft leagues. Often, the worst part of being a dynasty commissioner is filling orphaned teams. Be honest and realistic with yourself and your available time; don’t be that guy! 

More Leagues Means More Fun

The aforementioned statement still stands: Playing in multiple leagues is just more fun. Drafting, trading, claiming that player off waivers that propels you to the playoffs–stop me if you’re not already having fun thinking about some of these very moves you’ve made (or will be able to make if this is your first season). If you play in more leagues then you get more opportunities to draft. Additionally, if you play in more leagues you have more team owners to trade with. Consequently, if you possess the requisite time and task management skills, the more you play, the more you will enjoy it. 

Nothing is more frustrating than wanting to roster a player and that players’ team owner refuses to trade him. There is a solution… Join another league and draft that player! If you can’t draft that player, perhaps the new league will offer an owner who IS willing to trade you that player. Learning new league settings and the tendencies of new owners is a new and exciting challenge each year. Managing more fantasy football teams is a challenging endeavor in and of itself. Inherently, you are looking for competition when you join a fantasy league, so why not challenge yourself and join another? 

More Leagues Helps You Become a Better Player

Expanding on that last concept of challenging yourself, joining more leagues helps you become a better fantasy player. As the old adage goes: “Practice makes perfect.” The more experience you gain, the better you will become as an owner.

Playing in multiple leagues provides an opportunity for you to play in smaller 10 or 12 team leagues, as well as larger 14 or 16, or even 20 team leagues. You can even consider multi-copy leagues! Varying league sizes alter the values of players and draft picks. To grasp a better understanding of values, play in a variety of leagues! 

Hitting that same note, varying league scoring and settings will also alter the values of players and draft picks in your leagues! You’ve got tiered point per reception, point per first down, point per carry, and so many other options. Starting lineup variation can adjust values as well. The larger the starting lineups, the more valuable depth players become! There are even a variety of draft styles with snake-style draft order draft selections, proxy auctions, non-proxy auctions, blind bid auctions, and hybrids! Your author gets excited thinking of all the different styles of leagues he’s in. 

More Leagues Offers You More Variety

As was just alluded to, the more leagues you play in, the more opportunity you have to try out new things. Your author’s passion is bringing new and exciting league concepts to all that love fantasy football. Equity and innovation are the names of the game. Why have a league where everyone drafts off their printed-out rankings sheet? The owner who drafts Patrick Mahomes likely sits on him for the lifespan of the league. Instead, why not introduce a little chaos?!
