Important Training Camp Notes to Help Your Dynasty Team: Part 5

It’s training camp season! This is the third entry into my training camp series catching you up on all the important news that affects your Dynasty roster management.

So, let’s get into it.

1. Per Travis Wingfield, Miami Dolphins beat reporter:

“My god, De’Von Achane is going to have a monster year. He’s here, he’s there, he’s everywhere. This guy is doing so much with his game. His usage in the passing game, he circled that as something he could improve upon to get more of a piece of the pie of this dynamic offense that has oodles and oodles of skill players who can beat you, burn you, and score on you.

I just think Achane, maybe he’s receiver three. I’m watching this guy line up in the slot and run a slot fade and cook a corner – the pacing, the lineup, the stem, the explosive step to widen and then cut back inside, he looks like a receiver when he’s playing the position.”

Reaction:

Achane broke efficiency charts with his otherworldly rushing last year. Per Player Profiler, he ranked #1 in yards per touch and breakaway run rate. His expected points added (EPA) also led all running backs. However, the key to fantasy consistency at running back is being heavily involved in the receiving game. This has vaulted Christian McCaffrey, Austin Ekeler, and Alvin Kamara into RB1 fixtures over the last several years. If Achane unlocks that aspect of his game this year the wheels are up.

2. Dotson to the Eagles

Per Adam Schefter, the Commanders are trading WR Jahan Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Eagles for a 2025 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks.

Reaction:

For loyal DFF subscribers and those who follow me on X, you will know Dotson has been a fade of mine since he was first over-drafted in Round 1 of the NFL draft. Here is a post from before he was drafted.

The real winner of this trade is Luke McCaffrey. This now clears the slot role for LMC, who gained more fantasy points per career start at wide receiver than any other player drafted this year, including Malik Nabers and Marvin Harrison Jr. I roster LMC on 75% of my Dynasty teams, so my money is where my mouth is on him.

3. Rams HC Sean McVay on preserving Kyren Williams:

“Knowing what an instrumental part he’s gonna be, you want to be smart about that. And so that’s where we can be mindful of it. But in the meantime, he’s gonna go, he’s gonna lead the way for that running back room.”

Reaction:

There is a discount baked into Kyren Williams in fantasy drafts right now, utilizing the narrative that Blake Corum will steal volume from him. This is one where I will believe it when I see it. McVay has always had a propensity to lean on your running back more heavily than other coaches. More likely, Corum added much-needed depth to the RB room, as the Rams relied on Ronnie Rivers for that role last year. Williams finished as the RB2 overall in fantasy points per game last year, finishing well clear (3.4 fantasy points) from RB3. Despite this, he is being drafted as the RB8 overall. That is good value, even if Corum takes a small piece of his volume.

4. Per ESPN’s @JFowlerESPN:

WR Cooper Kupp is “all the way back” to full health, and the Rams’ offense “clearly runs through” Kupp.

Reaction:

Most of the fantasy world assumes that Kupp’s best days are behind him and that it is Puka time. However, if Kupp returns to his prior form, he could represent amazing value. He is currently ranked as the WR17 on Fantasy Pros expert consensus. He was the WR1 overall in the two prior years for Fantasy PPG. If these reports are valid, the reward is well worth the risk at that price.

5. #Raiders HC Antonio Pierce via Coachspeak Index on Bowers:

“I mean, just different. You’re talking about probably the most dynamic football player in college football at that tight-end position in a long time. And it’s rare you get a guy like that, that can line up as a slot receiver, see him in the backfield, reverses, catch the ball.” Pierce stated later in the presser that he was “shocked” Bowers was available at the 13th pick.

Reaction:

I am not a fan of using the term “generational”. However, it applies in the case of Brock Bowers. He is literally the best tight-end prospect ever. Breaking out as a freshman tight end is unheard of. Bowers had 882 yards and 13 touchdowns as a freshman at one of the most competitive programs in the nation. His 15.85 fantasy points per game were the most ever recorded for a tight end, besting Kyle Pitts.  Fantasy managers should love that all the accolades presented by Coach Pierce have to do with his receiving acumen vs blocking.

6. #Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy on the RB depth chart:

“It needs to solve itself… that’s really up to the players. That’s what the competition of training camp will solve.”

on Rico Dowdle

“He’s showed flashes as a young player, but once he fought through those injuries, really, last year when he was given an opportunity, he’s played really good football for us.”

#Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy on how many RBs will comprise his running back by committee:

“Whether it’s two or whether it’s three, to be honest with you, the players will determine that.”

McCarthy on Rico Dowdle:

“He’s definitely one of the lead guys in the room”

Reaction:

This running back room is one of the cheapest available in Dynasty. Any starting running back carries value in Dynasty, and on that offense, they should be able to score points. Elliot’s best days are far behind him, so the upside play is Dowdle.
