IDP Free Agent Frenzy

I’ll take a look at some of the defensive free agent signings from Wednesday. There has been a ton of action so far this offseason so don’t forget your IDP players.

Anthony Hitchens, LB РFrom Dallas to Kansas City

Kansas City went after the one of top free agent LB to make sure they had a leader in the middle of their defense heading into the draft. He will provide a three-down skill set for the Chiefs. It was a big void when Derrick Johnson was released. Hitchens will be a good spark to the defense. I like the fit and see a big boost in fantasy production for him as a locked in starter.

What KC got was a solid tackling LB who can drop into coverage and some quicks to chase the ball. I don’t see him being moved around to the outside with them but he will a steady performer in the middle. The Chiefs ILB position is very fantasy friendly, and I’m looking at an LB2 this coming season.

Trent Murphy, EDGE – From Washington to Buffalo

The Bills made another free agent splash to add some depth on the defensive front. It looks like Jerry Hughes is locked in leaving Shaq Lawson and Trent Murphy to tag team on the line. Trent Murphy does not have great skills but was able to get some heat on QBs. Last season was a wash as he recovered from two knee injuries. Personally, I like Lawson more, but the Bills brain trust may prefer Murphy. Or it may just be a move to add depth to the unit and not be left with a need in the draft. This is not an add-in dynasty for me.

Demario Davis, LB – From New York Jets to New Orleans

The Saints land a consistent tackler from the Jets. This is a solid upgrade here. Tackling machine who can work in a crowd and capable of getting after the QB if called upon. He really knows his way around the box and is good at applying pressure. The big question mark has been his coverage skills, but he really has made good progress on it. Saints landed their Mike! I like him for LB3 production! Here come the Saints, Marching in!

Avery Williamson, LB – From Tennessee to New York Jets

This is a great addition! Perfect fit for this defense and he will slide right into the vacant LB position Davis left open. He was a strong contributor for Tennessee last season and will be busy in NY. I expect LB2 numbers for him as well. He really landed in the perfect scheme, and he will be used to the fullest. Blitzing and dominating in run support he will help elevate the defense.  Reliability and youth are two major qualities to like here. Go, Gang Green!
