IDP Draft Profile: LB Folarin Orimolade, Dartmouth

Folarin Orimolade

First impressions

The Big Green had one of the Ivy Leagues best defensive players in the league. Explosive is my first impression of him. Guy’s a game changer. His impressive jump off the ball helped him earn the “Bushnell Award” which is given to the defensive player of the year, in the Ivy League. The quickness he shows is NFL worthy. One of my favorite moves he uses, is when he sets the tackle up with a speed move around the edge, then uses his hands to get the tackle off balance, then move inside of him to get into the QBs face. Moving through traffic does not faze him at all. Keeping alert with his head up he can zero in on the ball and make the play. When over the guard he has no trouble moving past him and getting penetration to disrupt the offense. Splitting between linemen at ease he blows up plays. In his 2016 campaign, that ability to penetrate netted him 14.5 tackles for a loss. Good enough for 23rd best in the nation. Dropping the QB 9 times, he also lead the Ivy conference in sacks.

What he brings to the NFL

With his ability to rush the passer, AND play the run, he will offer some serious skills. Playing ILB in a 34 or a 43 would be in his comfort level. Playing in a 34 he would be good at covering or rushing, which leaves me liking that style defense more. Blitzing or handling the run game he would be a quality player. I’m always looking for versatility, and if he plays ILB, on early downs, I could see him moving onto the line to rush the passer out of the nickel. Early in his career special teams would be helped with his presence. Carve out a pass rush specialist role as he awaits his turn as a full-time starter.

NFL Draft

It is possible he might not hear his name called. The scramble would then be on teams to sign him. I was impressed watching him. Regardless of which team drafts him late or signs him after the draft I am going to want him on my roster.

Fantasy relevance.

The “rush” LBs are not the glory hogs of fantasy. I believe he could be more than that at the next level. If he can work his way into an ILB role his value would spike up. Early in his career tackles would come from special teams play,  and would be role depended on his other stats. Taxi hold for me early, then watch and see. You just might strike fantasy gold.

Highlight show is wild.
