With Russell Wilson trade rumors swirling around the league, Seattle decided to bring back the starting running back that has lined up next to him the past four seasons. Last week, Chris Carson agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $14.6M, per reports from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The deal also includes a third voidable year that makes the contract cap-friendly.
It’s safe to say that Carson has been the most productive back for the Seahawks since Marshawn Lynch’s tenure. In his four seasons with the team, Carson has produced 3,270 rushing yards, 21 rushing touchdowns, 101 receptions, 775 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns. He also rushes for an impressive 4.6 yards per carry average throughout his career.
The only issue with Carson is his durability concerns. In his four seasons in the NFL, he has yet to play an entire 16-game season. He missed four games in 2020, and Seattle’s offense was easily less productive with Carson out. During the 13 games he played in (12 regular season, one postseason), Seattle averaged about 128.5 rushing yards per game, compared to just 109 rushing yards per game in the four games Carson missed. The team also went 11-3 when he was on the field and 2-2 when he wasn’t.
Bringing back the four-year-pro running back makes a lot of sense for Pete Carroll and the Seahawks. They’re in the middle of convincing Wilson to stay, amid the trade rumors. Bringing back the second-most productive running back Wilson has had in his professional career was a necessity. Wilson’s excitement has already been showcased on Twitter:
Carson will rejoin a running back room that features Rashaad Penny, DeeJay Dallas, Travis Homer, Alex Collins, and Patrick Carr.
Expect Carson and Penny to become a one-two punch (if healthy). Carson should be a top-20 fantasy running back once again. He finished 16th among fantasy running backs in total points last season. He also finished ninth in 2019 and 14th in 2018, respectively. Penny could be a dynamic RB4 or RB5 with abilities to catch and run out of the backfield. Dallas is a low-grade back who could possess fantasy valuable should Penny or Carson miss time (have both missed time the past two seasons each). With or without Wilson as Seattle’s quarterback, Carson should have another fine season if he stays healthy.
