It’s that time of year where we see old faces find homes in new places. Sometimes a change of scenery can be bad, but it also can be good. In this case, what’s one teams cast off is another teams treasure.
After the Eagles lost Jordan Hicks in free agency, they had a void to fill and no one on their roster they felt that could fill that role. So they decided to sign former Washington Redskins linebacker Zach Brown. In his two seasons in Washington, he averaged one hundred eighteen tackles and one and a half sacks. He might still be in Washington, but he was a cap casualty, saving Washington $5.75 million against the cap. His peak was in Buffalo in 2016 when he recorded one hundred forty-nine tackles and four sacks.
Over the next two seasons in Washington, he regressed, hence the decision to release him and save money. It made sense with his drop in production and the money they could save, and it was the right decision to release him.
In Philly his fourth team, he’ll get another chance to be the man in the middle. As I mentioned before, he’ll replace Jordan Hicks who was injured in two of his four seasons and only had one season with over ninety tackles. Brown who will replace him has had five such seasons in his seven-year career. Brown doesn’t turn 30 until after the season starts and graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 3 off-ball linebacker out of 61 qualifiers last season, behind only Luke Kuechly and Bobby Wagner. This is not only a good replacement but also an upgrade for the Eagles in my opinion. They have several options at MLB, but none of them are as good as Brown. They signed rookie T.J. Edwards, but he’s not close to being ready to handle the middle for the Eagles.
Fantasy owners should expect Brown to record right around one hundred tackles for the season and anything extra is just gravy. I see his fantasy grade being LB2/3 for this season. He still has three or four good seasons left in the tank and is a solid fantasy option, especially in dynasty or deep roster leagues.
