Breece Hall | Iowa State 5’11” 217 lbs. | 05/31/2001 (Age 20)
Breece Hall was drafted 36th overall by the New York Jets, becoming the first running back and 36th overall player in the 2022 NFL Draft.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Year | Games Played | Attempts | Yards | Yards/Attempt | TDs |
2019 (FR) | 12 | 186 | 897 | 4.8 | 9 |
2020 (SO) | 12 | 279 | 1,572 | 5.6 | 21 |
2021 (JR) | 12 | 253 | 1,472 | 5.8 | 20 |
In three seasons at Iowa State, Hall compiled 3,941 rushing yards, 734 receiving yards, and 56 total touchdowns. Although his 2020 numbers are slightly better, he carried that momentum into 2021, as he broke the NCAA record for the most consecutive games with at least one rushing touchdown (24). He’s a two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, he led the FBS in rushing in 2020, and he finished sixth in the Heisman voting in 2020 as well. Hall is believed to be the best running back prospect in this draft. There’s no doubt that he can start and contribute right away in this league.
STRENGTHS
Hall is a magician when it comes to seeing lanes before they open up. He runs with patience and makes rhythmic cuts in the open field. Endzone machine, as he finished with 50 rushing touchdowns in 36 collegiate games. Shows great bend and balance, and has the size of an ideal workhorse back. Above-average third-down back who shows great hands and can be a viable pass-catcher out of the backfield.
WEAKNESSES
Doesn’t portray his elite speed and often gets caught from behind. Hesitates in his initial reads at times and jukes almost too much. Showcases average burst through the line of scrimmage. He’ll need to play faster and adjust to NFL speed.
ATHLETIC TESTING
At the NFL combine, Hall measured in at 6’1” and 220 lbs. Which equates to a BMI of 30.3. He ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, equating to a 116.9-speed score. Both figures are in the 97th percentile or higher. Hall also comes into the draft with a 131.0 burst score and a college dominator score of 43.9 percent. Both of those figures land him in the 94th percentile or higher.
Hall showcases elite speed, as his 4.39 40-yard dash time landed him second amongst running backs at the combine. He also recorded great leaping abilities, as he produced a 40” vertical jump and a 126” broad jump. His athletic testing at the combine only solidified him more as the top running back prospect in the draft. One red flag with Hall is that he lacks top-tier strength at his position, which may lead to a career as a below-average pass-blocker.
DRAFT ANALYSIS
Rapid Reaction to Draft Capital: Excellent
Rapid Reaction to Landing Spot: Excellent
Hall was selected with the 36th-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
Michael Carter Jr. will be joined by Hall in a “now” very talented running back room. Both backs bring versatility, as they showcase tough running and excellent receiving abilities.
FANTASY INSIGHTS
Hall will likely start the season splitting touches with Carter Jr. Eventually, we should expect Hall to take over as the team’s lead back. He’s a future workhorse and a surefire RB2 (at least) to start off his career. In dynasty start-ups, he’s a considerable choice in the late second round/early third round. For redraft, he may be an early second-round talent. He’s a top-two running back in this class, and he’s going to receive ample amounts of opportunities in New York.
