John Metchie III was drafted with the 12th pick of the second round by the Houston Texans, becoming the ninth wide receiver and 44th overall player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION

The four-star recruit signed with Alabama after one year at a prep school. He contributed in all 13 games in 2019 but then became a large part of the team’s national championship run in 2020. Metchie III started 11 of 13 games, catching 55 passes for 916 yards and six scores. This past year he earned second-team All-SEC honors with a team-high 96 receptions (1,142 yards, 11.9 per rec., eight TDs) before suffering a torn ACL in the conference title game and missing the team’s playoff run.

ATHLETIC TESTING

Due to a late-season ACL tear, Metchie III was not able to showcase any physical abilities during the pre-draft process.

FANTASY INSIGHTS

John Metchie III is an early-declare WR that just dominated the SEC and is coming off of injury. Metchie III was good enough to start alongside fellow Alabama alumni and first-round picks Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith in 2020. This past season, Metchie was relied upon to be Bryce Young’s go-to receiver, a role he was effective in until teammate Jameson Williams began to blossom and he shared the load. Like Williams, Metchie also went down with an unfortunate ACL injury at the end of the season, just two games before Jameson did.

While the jury is still out on Davis Mills, if he does end up being the Texans’ QB of the future he will get to grow with Metchie III. Metchie III will be a reliable safety blanket for Mills out of the slot. He utilizes his plus-route running skills and elevated football IQ to excel. He compliments the Texans’ offense nicely, as they have the speed element and trusty veteran in Brandin Cooks, the big-bodied, contested-catch receiver in Nico Collins, and now the crafty slot man in Metchie.
