Tyler Allgeier was drafted 151st overall by the Atlanta Falcons, becoming the 12th running back selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Tyler Allgeier was an elite producer in college and smashed nearly every threshold that I look at in my rookie model. Allgeier had best-season scrimmage yards per game of 133.4 yards, which barely misses my 135-yard threshold. He had career yards per carry mark of 6.4, which beats my elite mark of 6.0. He had 2.0 best season yards per team play which surpasses my elite mark of 1.9. Tyler also secured an 11% best season reception share which is over my elite threshold of 10%. Lastly, Allgeier smashes my TD share mark with a 75.8% share, where he only needed a 35% share to hit that goal. Overall, he hits four of the five marks and almost hits the last one. He has a great production profile and I think he is being seriously undervalued in rookie drafts right now.
ATHLETIC TESTING
The biggest knock on Tyler Allgeier is his athleticism. He managed just a 59th-percentile speed score and a 37th-percentile burst score at the NFL Combine. Those numbers are less than ideal. However, production and draft capital are still better indicators of NFL success. And, for what it’s worth, James Conner has multiple RB1 seasons on his resume with an incredibly similar athletic profile.
DRAFT ANALYSIS
Despite his impressive college production, Tyler Allgeier slipped to the fifth round of the draft where he was finally scooped up by the Atlanta Falcons. In terms of backfield competition, Atlanta was the most favorable option at this stage of the draft. The only RB of consequence on the roster (apologies to Mike Davis and Damien Williams) is a 31-year-old Cordarrelle Patterson, whose career-high in rush attempts is just 153. For this reason, Allgeier is very likely to make the active roster, and I will not be surprised if he carves out a role in year one.
FANTASY INSIGHTS
Tyler Allgeier is a big, tough running back that has also shown an aptitude for catching passes. Although he did not test well, he showed great long speed on film. He has had proven college production and he is one of my favorite backs in this class. He will be buried on Atlanta’s depth chart to start his career, but he could easily find himself starting for a stretch of games due to injury. He also has special teams ability, which should help him to stay active on game days. He’s just the type of player to take a shot on in the third or fourth round of rookie drafts.
