IDP Rookie Recap Week 2

Each week I will recap the top performances by this year’s rookie defenders. Some are well-known names and others come out of nowhere. Rookies are highly coveted in the dynasty community, but their value can be very volatile at times. In this series each week, we’ll look at their numbers and what impact they have. I am also including their snap counts and percentage of snaps. These snap counts can tell us a lot about how much a player is being used and the opportunities they have to make plays. I like to target rookies that play 80% plus of the team’s defensive snaps. Let’s jump right into this week’s group.

Trio of Cyclones

The Iowa State Cyclones have a trio of linebackers that should be on your devy radars. This group complements each other extremely well and all three play a different style. To see a team with three linebackers where each could be the lead dog for their defense is uncommon. That is the fortunate situation that the Cyclones find themselves having right now. I have been watching a lot of film and games on these guys and all three are legit playmakers. Let’s take a closer look at these three tremendous players.

Deep IDP Fantasy Buys

am going to give you some deep, buy low IDP options for the upcoming fantasy season. These are players that are not on the radar of most IDP fantasy owners in deep dynasty leagues but should be. The players on this list, are young guys on the rise, they may get their chance to make an impact for their teams or they may be rookies with no real competition ahead of them on the depth chart. Let’s take a look at these players and what they could help for your fantasy team.

CB, Isaac Yiadom, Denver Broncos The second-year corner out of Boston College, was a low-risk rookie buy last season but wasn’t owned in many leagues (less than 5%). As a rookie he played in thirteen games, starting one, he played a total of 439 total snaps. He played 263 defensive snaps, which was 24.3% of the Broncos defensive total. He also played 176 special teams snaps, that accounted for 49.1%. As you can see, he was a core special teams piece in his first year….

2019 IDP Bounce-Back Candidates

In this article, we are going to take a look at a few bounce-back candidates for this season. For whatever the reason these players underperformed a year ago, but I am expecting them to bounce back this season and hopefully help lead fantasy owners to a championship. Let’s see who I believe will return to form in 2019.
DE, Leonard Williams, New York JetsWilliams’ best season came back in 2016 when he posted 68 tackles, seven sacks, and 19 quarterback hits. In the two years since, the Jets defense lost some keys pieces such as Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson, leaving Williams to carry the workload. With not much help, his numbers took a hit. While he still had the opportunity to make plays, with 45 combined quarterback hits the last two seasons, he just didn’t have enough around him to take advantage of these opportunities. Now we look to 2019, and the defense has added some much-needed talent and defenses won’t be able to focus on taking Williams out of the game. They signed big-time free agent CJ Mosley to play next to Avery Williamson and drafted rookie phenom Quinnen Williams, who will play nose tackle and keep teams from game planning around Leonard. Let’s not forget that they have superstar safety Jamal Adams at safety. Now that they have some talent to surround Williams with, I expect him to bounce back to the 2016 version. Teams won’t find it as easy to scheme for just him anymore. I believe 68 and seven-plus sacks is a very reasonable expectation for him this season. He can be had at a low buy value right now in most leagues, so now is the time to acquire him.

Buy Low IDP Dynasty Assets

I’m going to give you at least one buy low dynasty asset at each position, that I believe you are must own or you should stash away on your bench or taxi squads. These players may need a year or so to give you a significant return, but it will be worth the wait. Let’s jump right into it.
Up first is the defensive tackle position, and we head to Buffalo, to discuss 2nd-year guy, Harrison Phillips. If you have been following me, then you know I was high on him coming out of Stanford. As a rookie, he played in all sixteen games but had zero starts. Harrison was buried on the depth chart behind veterans, Kyle Williams and Star Lotulelei. He outperformed Lotulelei and with Williams now retired; he’s a prime candidate to step into a starting role.

Ever since I was a baby I’ve always either had a football in my crib or was playing “crawling football” since I couldn’t walk, stuff like that. It just seems like I’ve always been around the game. Why did you transfer from Boise State to Duquesne to further your football career? When I initially signed, the DC and the DB coach who recruited me there, left right after. It was clear to me that the new DC’s vision for the defense was to have thicker guys at the corner position. In fact, they brought in a 6’0”, 200 lbs. CB in the spring of 2017 and immediately put him in the starting spot. I did eventually earn the starting position, but a big part of me getting my opportunity was because that CB they brought in got suspended. I played well the first 3 games and I was rated the top player overall on that team as per PFF rankings. Then against Virginia, I got a minor injury and had to come out of the game. From then on, I barely played any defensive snaps and it was very apparent what the DC had in mind for the defense. I then had to make a decision to either stay where I was at under the same staff or leave, so I left. I chose Duquesne for two reasons:  1. It provided a National Tier 1 education, and 2. They play in a high passing conference and they promised to play me in the slot which is where I feel like I project at the next level. That being said, I have no hard feelings for anyone at Boise State and I am extremely happy at Duquesne.

Tackling Machines

In the history of the NFL, there have only been seven players that have recorded back to back seasons of 135+ tackle seasons, in their first two years in the league. This upcoming season, we could add two more to the list. Before we get to them, let’s look at some historical happenings of this occurrence. As I mentioned, we could add two more after this season, but there have been three previous instances of having multiple players accomplish this in the same season. What’s interesting is that every time this feat has happened, there has always been multiple players in the same season. Never has there only been one player at a time to accomplish this.
