What we learned this week
Weather can wreck a passing game. Both New York and Washington D.C. dealt with some major weather this weekend, which made passing through the storm tough and gave defenses the upper hand. The San Francisco 49ers defense held Case Keenum to 77 passing yards while the New York Giants D (helped by game-script) held Kyler Murray to 104 yards through the air. As always, check weather patterns when setting lineups. Nasty outdoor games can change scoring expectations drastically.
On Thursday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs defense showed out against the hapless Denver Broncos offense. They dropped Joe Flacco nine times as well as taking a fumble recovery to the house. Players who took advantage of the juicy matchup were Frank Clark, Alex Okafor, Anthony Hitchens, and Emmanuel Ogbah.
Marcus Peters and Jalen Ramsey both had a nice Sunday after trades sent these players to Baltimore and Los Angeles, respectively. Peters took a pick back for a score in Seattle while Ramsey produced four tackles and a forced fumble in a Rams dominating win against the Falcons.
Top Player Performances
Dante Fowler – LB – LOS ANGELES RAMS
A year ago, Fowler was stuck in Jacksonville and considered a bust as the third overall pick in the 2015 draft. Over the next 12 months, the former Florida star was traded to the Rams, made an appearance in the Super Bowl, and has put together a very nice 2019 season so far. On Sunday, it all culminated with a monstrous performance. Fowler racked up seven total tackles, three for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass defended. As an IDP linebacker, Fowler is an excellent asset in best-ball leagues that reward sacks more than tackles.
Chandler Jones– LB – ARIZONA CARDINALS
Sunday was another tremendous day for the eight-year pro in New York. In the rain, the Syracuse alum pummeled Daniel Jones, sacking him four times on the day. The star linebacker also added five solo tackles, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to his stat line. If you own Chandler Jones as an IDP asset, you are likely starting him every week, as you should be.
Nick Bosa – DE – SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS and Joey Bosa – DE – LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
Wow, the Bosa brothers are playing well right now. Both healthy and in their primes, it’s amazing to see them wreaking havoc in the NFL. This week, Joey was able to create two sacks, a forced fumble, and five total tackles while Nick secured seven total tackles, four tackles for loss, and a sack on the day. The time to buy the Bosa boys has probably passed. If you have either in your roster, consider yourself lucky, they are both high-end DE1s, as long as they stay healthy.
Eric Kendricks – LB – MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Through week seven of the 2019 NFL season, Kendricks is the model of IDP consistency. The former UCLA Bruin has delivered at least five solo tackles in each game and is averaging over 1.28 passes defended per game as well. Kendricks is on pace for 140 total tackles, and a whopping 21 passes defended. Even with his gaudy and consistent statistics, there may be a few IDP owners who don’t understand Kendricks’ full value, so if you can procure him at a discount, he’s a high floor LB1, who could be a centerpiece for a title run.
Notable Injuries
Montae Nicholson – S – WASHINGTON REDSKINS
It was reported that Nicholson was spotted in a walking boot on Monday after leaving Sunday’s matchup with an ankle injury. The third-year man out of Michigan State was enjoying a very nice season, averaging nearly six tackles per game in the Washington secondary. If Nicholson misses significant time, Troy Apke becomes the likely new starter in DC.
Darius Slay – CB – DETROIT LIONS
Slay has been dealing with a bum hamstring for a month now. This week, he had to leave the game against the Vikings after re-aggravating the injury in coverage. With Slay out, Justin Coleman and Rashaan Melvin can be expected to take the bulk of the cornerback snaps in Detroit.
Adoree Jackson – CB – TENNESSEE TITANS
Jackson, a 24-year-old starter out of USC, was forced to exit the Chargers game on Sunday with a foot injury. As of writing, it’s unknown how serious the injury might be, but without Jackson, Tennessee will have to rely on LeShaun Sims to take over at corner.
