Last year when this series debuted, I wanted to help shed light on one of my favorite tricks in Fantasy Football, Waiver Wire Sniping. The strategy is simple. Without compromising your roster (of course), look to see if you have an available roster spot or a player that you were holding as a possible fill-in for a week that is no longer needed. Then look a week or two ahead and see if any of your current starters are on a bye or have a matchup you want to avoid.
By picking up a streaming option or high-end stash before the weekend action, you can “snipe” that player for free and before that player is featured on podcasts (such as the Fantasy Football Fellas podcast – shameless plug) and waiver articles across the fantasy football world. “Sniping” allows you to eliminate the grueling wait on Wednesday or Thursday morning, hoping your Waiver Wire pick-up isn’t grabbed by another team with a lower waiver priority or more FAAB dollars. If the chips fall your way, you may have a very valuable piece for the low-low price of NOTHING.
Each week I’ll be giving you potential steaming options for the week ahead, some stash candidates that are widely available in redraft leagues, and highlighting the tough matchups and teams on bye in the coming week.
Here are some guys that you might not necessarily need for this week, but might be high Waiver Wire pickups for week 3.
Week 3 Streaming Options
Ryan Tannehill vs. OAK (7%) – There are a couple of guys that are a more owned that I would take over Tannehill as a streaming option (Case Keenum 37% & Tyrod Taylor 30%). But If you’re looking for deeper league guy, you can’t go wrong with this matchup. Tannehill is facing a questionable Raiders’ defense that will be traveling to the east coast for a 1 pm kickoff for their second straight road game. Like Tannehill’s upside next week.
Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. PIT (18%) – I’d take Tannehill over Fitzmagic but I’m not a believer in the Steelers defense, and with this possibly being Fitzpatrick’s “last hurrah” on a Monday night at home, I think he’s an interesting deep league play.
Matt Breida @ KC (57%) – I believe Breida is the 49ers RB to own and I think he’s in for a nice game this week against the Lions, so I wouldn’t expect the 57% ownership to last when waivers run next week. I’d try to grab him now to get in front of the competition, but also because I expect him to have a nice game chasing points vs. the Chiefs in week 3.
Jalen Richard @ MIA (4%) – I know Breida’s current ownership is a little high, so for you deep leaguers out there, I’d take a shot on Richard in PPR. Wouldn’t mind him on the end of my bench to see if week 1 was a fluke or if he can be the passing downs back for Oakland.
Chris Godwin vs. PIT (35%) – Criminally under-owned at this point, so if your league isn’t paying attention, grab Godwin now. He could be in for a big week 2 if Jackson is out for Tampa and think he has some nice upside going forward.
Dante Pettis @ KC (10%) – As mentioned above, I expect the 49ers to be chasing points, but I’m not scared of that Kansas City defense. With the injury question mark around Goodwin heading into week 2, Pettis is someone I would look to stash in keeper leagues. I mean come on people! The man is only 1% more owned than Donte Moncrief! Choose the right Dante!
Jonnu Smith @ JAX (19%) – Jonnu is not necessarily a great streaming option due to the matchup next week, but I think he has long-term appeal. This is a guy you should look to add to potentially solidify your TE position going forward. I like the talent, and now he finally has the opportunity.
Cleveland Browns vs. NYJ (7%) – The Browns will face off against a rookie QB on a short week at home. I like their chances to be top 12 next week.
The Stashes – Other players to monitor that might be available in your league. Listed below in order I would rank these pickups.
QB: Jameis Winston (12%) – One week closer to reinstatement and his ownership has gone down. Stash if you can.
Shallow League Options: Marlon Mack (47%), Austin Ekeler (41%), Aaron Jones (60%), Jordan Wilkins (32%), Ronald Jones II (29%)
Deeper League Options: Corey Grant (1%), Ito Smith (0%)
Shallow League Options: Quincy Enunwa (56%), Brandon Marshall (45%), Mike Williams (59%), Geronimo Allison (31%), Kenny Golladay (59%)
Deeper League Options: Phillip Dorsett (22%), Cole Beasley – PPR (12%), Ryan Grant (7%)
Week 3 Potential Matchups to Avoid: BUF @ MIN, IND @ PHI, LAC @ LAR, NYG @ HOU, TEN @ JAX
Teams on Bye next week: None – Bye weeks begin in week 4.
