A Year Without Fantasy Football

Imagine a year without fantasy football. Imagine a year without any NFL football whatsoever: no preseason, no training camp, not even walkthroughs. Just pure and uninterrupted stagnation throughout the National Football League and each and every one of your dynasty or redraft leagues. Has anyone really contemplated the effects a year like that could have on your leagues if the NFL hadn’t pushed forward, virus be damned?  The reason I’m raising the subject is that I’ve noticed a fair amount of disdain and contempt towards fantasy football and the NFL due to mounting injuries and increasing uncertainty from week to week.

Rookie Stock Market: Week 11

We are only a week or two away from the playoffs depending on your league. We’ve witnessed lots of splash weeks from this rookie class along with plenty of flops. Counting on rookies on a week to week basis is a gamble but can often pay off. I have monitored the ebb and flow of this rookie class and I hope to have you prepared to make an informed start or sit situation come playoff time. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s see how some of the rookies fared this past weekend.

Thanksgiving Day Storylines

The Cowboys come into this contest relatively healthy, of course, excluding Dak Prescott, who’s out for the season. Ezekiel Elliott continues to log limited practices with a hamstring issue, but he’s not on the game’s final injury report. Elliott looked better last week, as he took 21 carries for 103 yards for his first 100-yard game this season. Hopefully, Elliott continues his upward trend this week, although he’s a hard sell for me in dynasty leagues no matter what.

The Titans and Their COVID Violations

At this point, I’m at a loss for words. Typically when I discuss COVID-19 and its effects on players, I try to sympathize with them as much as I can. I know that you come to me and DFF to read about fantasy football, and I’ll give you that advice. I’m here to help your fantasy teams. However, I always like to make sure we treat the NFL players and coaching staffs as people and remember that they’re human beings too.

Adjusting the Lens Without Cam

As fantasy players, we understand the risk behind playing each year, and if you participated this year the inherent risk was even larger. It’s exactly what most fantasy analysts predicted, a rough uphill climb to a championship. It may seem like players are being injured more frequently this season, but this was expected due to a lack of offseason preparation. Players’ unexpected absences from games were also expected, and hopefully, you followed fantasy advice from across the industry about adding IR and extra bench spots for just this scenario.

Titans and Steelers Postponement

I hoped I would never have to write this article, but it’s finally time. After three weeks of relative calm, the COVID-19 pandemic has now disrupted the NFL season. Last week, the Titans had multiple players and personnel test positive for COVID-19 after their game against the Vikings. Luckily, as of this moment, no Vikings have tested positive, meaning that their season should proceed as scheduled.

Thinking Ahead: 2022 Pick Value on the Rise

2020 has been a year unlike any other. The COVID-19 virus has changed the way the world operates. The United States with over 160,000 deaths and over 5,000,000 cases has been affected in ways we as a society have not seen. One of the most impacted ways of our community has been sports. High school, collegiate, and professional sports have been devastated. One of the most impacted organizations is the NCAA.

C.J. Mosley Opt Out Fallout: Rapid Reaction

The league-altering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have now significantly hurt the IDP world of fantasy football, as a consensus LB2 in C.J. Mosley just became the biggest name on the defensive side of the football to take the NFL’s opt-out alternative to the 2020 season. Mosley joins Patriots’ linebacker Dont’a Hightower and safety Patrick Chung as the only rosterable IDPs to have opted out before the season, outside of deeper leagues. This is a monumental blow to the New York Jets’ defense as well.

Damien Williams Opt-Out: Rapid Reaction

The likely Kansas City Chiefs starting running back, Damien Williams, has opted out for the 2020 NFL seasons due to COVID-19 concerns. He will sit the season out but who can blame him? The NFL players are just like you and me. They need to think of their families and themselves before anything else if that’s what they think is best.  From a fantasy/dynasty football perspective, this feels like the first “opt-out” seriously impacting our little world and deserves some attention.
